Unblocktober 2024 is Here - Get Ready for a Whale of a Time

Thursday 3rd October, 2024

It’s October, which means one thing – Unblocktober 2024 has officially begun! This month-long campaign aims to raise awareness about how we can all help protect our seas, sewers and drains by making simple changes to what we dispose of down our sinks and toilets. Whether you're an individual, business or community group, there's a way for everyone to get involved and make a difference. So, come join in the Unblocktober fun and let's work together for a healthier, cleaner environment.

What is Unblocktober?

Unblocktober is the world’s first national campaign dedicated to improving the health of our water systems through public engagement. Launched in 2019 by Lanes Group, the initiative encourages people to rethink their waste disposal habits by pledging not to flush or pour items like fats, oils, grease (FOG) and non-biodegradable products down the drain. These small changes in behaviour can have a significant impact on reducing blockages in sewers and preventing plastic pollution from entering our rivers and seas.

Why is Unblocktober important?

Improper waste disposal is a growing problem that can cause significant environmental damage. When non-flushable items like wet wipes, cotton buds and even cooking oils are poured or flushed away, they can lead to the formation of 'fatbergs' – large, solid masses that block sewers and cause flooding, pollution and expensive repairs. Plastic pollution in particular is a major issue, with millions of tonnes of plastic waste entering the oceans every year. By participating in Unblocktober, you can help reduce this pollution and protect our waterways.

What’s coming up?

This year, Unblocktober is packed with exciting events and activities aimed at raising awareness and encouraging participation. There will be a series of social media competitions and challenges throughout the month, providing fun and educational opportunities for everyone. Keep an eye on Unblocktober's social media channels for announcements and updates, and don’t forget to sign up for the newsletter to stay informed about upcoming events and activities. Whether it's sharing your tips for reducing waste or participating in a community clean-up, there's something for everyone.

How can you get involved?

Getting involved in Unblocktober is simple, and every small action counts. Here’s how you can participate:

  • Take the pledge: commit to changing your kitchen and bathroom habits for the month. It’s quick, free and easy to sign up on the Unblocktober website.
  • Spread the word: share your pledge with family, friends and colleagues. Use the hashtag #Unblocktober2024 on social media to show your support and encourage others to join.
  • Implement small changes: avoid pouring the following down your drains:

    • Food – even crumbs
    • Wet wipes
    • Face masks
    • Tampons, applicators and wrappers
    • Sanitary/menstrual pads and towels

By taking these simple steps, you can contribute to a larger effort to protect our environment and improve the health of our water systems.

Why your help is important

Your participation in Unblocktober helps the fight against environmental damage caused by improper waste disposal. The more people that join in, the greater the impact we can have in reducing pollution and preventing blockages in our sewers. For businesses, particularly those in the food industry, taking part in Unblocktober is an opportunity to demonstrate commitment to corporate social responsibility and improve waste management practices. By making small, conscious changes to everyday habits, we can all play a role in protecting our environment for future generations.

So, let’s make Unblocktober 2024 the most successful campaign yet! Take the pledge, spread the word, and take action to ensure a healthier, cleaner future for our seas, sewers and drains. Together, we can make a real difference.
